Oils and acrylics are thick paints, which can be used to capture small details with precise brush strokes. The ease of applicaiton and quick drying abilities of acrylics make this medium a great choice for lower-cost, but durable paintings. Oil, on the other hand, has the ability for slow, glossed applications, giving paintings done in this medium great depth and expression.

Watercolors are transparent paints, which allow the white of the paper to shine through and create lights and darks by varying the density of color washes. Thus, working in watercolor requires both patience and spontaneity to control the movement of pigment. The finished product will be airy and light, with an ethereal quality that thicker mediums do not posess.
